Carbon dioxid offsetting
Reaching the Paris agreement and an attempt to stop Global Worming before reaching a snowball effect and devastating consequences requires massive work. Minimizing our climate impact or even managing reaching zero emissions will not be enough, a massive part of CO2 reduction from the atmosphere is needed as well.
Eco Now address the carbon emission complications in to different categories of offsetting. Negative reduction, storage of CO2, preventing emissions from prioritized areas of ”danger zones”, speeding up renewable energy, developing countries projects with social values, and offsetting as a financial investment.

How it works
Start by knowing your emissions
A good start is to have an idea on how much CO2 you want to offset.
Offsetting can be done for a certain product, a specific action (like a flight travel or an event) or for the companies total emissions. There are many more or less serious simplified models for emission calculations to be found on the web and in various programs, but a serious offsetting strategy should preferable be accompanied by a professional emission report calculation done by a 3d party. Calculations being done by 3d party makes it trustworthy if the offsettings is part of your public information and/or communication strategy. Accurate calculations is of course also important for conducting a serious sustainability agenda and progress.
Eco Now provides this service and do Greenhouse Gas protocol reports in Scope 1,2 and 3. Together with our partners we can also offer all sorts of advanced emission calculations, Lifecycle reports, EPD etc. We work closely with 2050 Consulting.
How much should you offset?
Once you know how much emissions your company, product or action is emitting its time to terming how much of that impact you want to offset. In order to be ”climate positive” you need to take hight for uncertainties + add a minimum extra 10 %. Then you offset more emissions then you generate and contributes to the important work of reducing emissions from the atmosphere.
Determination of offsetting
The traditional determination for offsetting is that the offsetting part must be verified by 3d parties(PLAN VIO, Gold Standard, REDD+ etc), is traceable so its not possible to sell the same offsetting quote several times, and that offsetting project would not have been realized anyway (without the offsetting investment).
Why various prices?
You may have noticed that various projects differ allot in price. There are many factors affecting the price. Some projects are much more difficult and expensive to conduct, the level of 3d party verifications and follow up varies greatly, the accuracy of how much emissions the project can avoid etc. Also the credit volumes makes a difference in prices. Eco Now work with Natural Capital Partners who can safeguard very large credits and have the global recourses and knowhow to choose and also initiate the best available projects.
Preserving and adding to the worlds carbon sink capacity. Price from 5 Euros / ton
The forest are in addition to our oceans the most important natural carbon sinks. Trees binds CO2 in various amounts depending on type of tree, and all trees takes various time to to grow. Protecting our rainforests and natural old forests are of massive importance as they can’t just be replaced by new fast-growing trees for industry use. Rainforests and other old forest are often slow growing trees that live for a very long time and are part of a habitat that have unique biodiversity qualities.
Protecting our rainforests and at the same time planting new trees and securing a sustainable deforestation policy in developing countries is one the most important and conrete actions we can take against global warming.
When calculating the carbon emission benefits in CO2 from forest projects a certain loss caused by storms, fires etc are taken into account.

Preventing or reducing?
Reducement of CO2 from the atmosphere and preventing new CO2 emission from adding to the already hightened levels are two various strategies.
An important part of the sustainability work each company and county as well as private individuals should focus on is of course how to minimize ones own climate impact. The current situation is that we have way to high levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and each day, month and year those levels are escalating. We don’t know much time we have exactly before we reach a tipping point.
Making sure further emissions are not released is as such an important part of offsetting. Developing countries faces many challenges in these areas, recently Project Drawdown put management of old referigerators as the No 1 most important challenge to adress in order to prevent massive release of greenhouse gas emissions. (we can of course offer projects that support this work). But it can also be projects that replaces ineffective equipment that generates much emissions like fossil fule heated household products and water purification.
The CO2 gas have a lifespan of 100 years in the atmosphere though so even if we got all of the worlds emissions to zero today, our levels are still too high. Reducing emissions from the atmosphere is therefore equaly important. Offsetting can as such suggestfully be diversified by including both methods. Planting trees is one way to reduce the Co2 but it is not permanent, threes don’t live for ever. The only available permanent method today is Direct Air Capture.
Reducing CO2 from the air permanently
There is only one method that is fully operational that can suck the CO2 out of the air directly, separate it and then store it permanently. Thats Climeworks DAC plants on Iceland. The plants are driven by thermal energy , requires minimum water and land use, has a direct immediate reduction impact and once the CO2 has crystallized with the natural basaltic rock in Iceland, it’s permapent This is likely the most important technique we have available right now fighting the increasing CO2 levels and global warming. The first plant opened in 2017 and the next one will open in 2020. Eco Now have exclusive rights in Sweden to represent and offer Climeworks services.

Prices are currently quite high but will go down once more factories open up. In order for more factories to open up pioneer have to be willing to take the extra cost though.
EQT and FORES are some of those pioneers in Sweden so far. Prices start at 990 Euro / ton but volumes over 300 tons is currently down to 650 Euro. That number is expected to reach 400 Euros some time after the second factory is up and running next year. The goal is to reach 100 Euro / ton in 2025.
Speeding up the transformation to renewable energy is an important task. This offsetting projects doesn’t cary the same powerful storytelling or social values but is a cost efficient and proven method for offsetting.
The projects make renewable energy plants in developing countries possible, and excludes the often cheaper and pouluting fossil fuel alternatives being set up instead.
Prices from about 2 euro per Ton.
Right now we have have the West India Wind Power project available for 2 Euro per ton for orders of minimum 5000 ton. Smaller orders also possible.
